Few sandwiches spark as much debate as the Cuban sandwich. Mention it around a group of Cubans, Floridians, or food lovers, and you’ll quickly discover there’s more than one way to make this iconic sandwich.
The biggest rivalry? Miami vs. Tampa.
So what’s the difference, and which one is the “real” Cuban sandwich? The answer depends on who you ask.
The Miami Cuban Sandwich
For many Cuban families, especially those with roots in Miami, the Cuban sandwich is all about simplicity and balance.
A traditional Miami-style Cuban sandwich includes:
● Cuban bread
● Roasted mojo pork
● Ham
● Swiss cheese
● Yellow mustard
● Dill pickles
That’s it.
The sandwich is pressed until the bread is crispy on the outside while remaining light and airy inside. Every bite delivers the perfect combination of savory pork, smoky ham, melted Swiss cheese, tangy mustard, and crunchy pickles.
One detail that many Miami Cubans will passionately defend? The pickles and pork should go from end to end. Nobody wants to bite into half a sandwich before finally finding the pickles.
The Tampa Cuban Sandwich
Drive about four hours northwest to Tampa, and you’ll notice one extra ingredient.
Genoa salami.
Tampa’s Cuban sandwich was shaped by the city’s multicultural immigrant community. Alongside Cuban cigar workers were many Italian immigrants, who added Genoa salami to the sandwich. Over time, it became a defining feature of the Tampa version.
A Tampa-style Cuban typically includes:
● Cuban bread
● Mojo roasted pork
● Ham
● Genoa salami
● Swiss cheese
● Yellow mustard
● Dill pickles
Everything is pressed just like the Miami version, but the salami adds another layer of richness and saltiness.

So Which One Is Authentic?
Here’s the truth: both are authentic.
The Miami Cuban sandwich reflects the traditions carried by Cuban families who settled in South Florida. The Tampa Cuban tells the story of a city where Cuban, Spanish, and Italian cultures blended together.
Neither version is “wrong.” They’re simply products of different histories.
Our Take
At Cuban Cracker Family Kitchen, we stay true to the Miami-style Cuban sandwich because that’s how we believe the classic sandwich should be made. We load every sandwich with juicy mojo pork, quality ham, Swiss cheese, yellow mustard, and pickles from one end to the other before pressing it until perfectly crispy.
That said, we have nothing but respect for the Tampa version. If you love salami on your Cuban, you’re in good company.
Food has a way of telling stories, and both sandwiches represent generations of tradition, family, and culture.
The only question left is…
Are you Team Miami or Team Tampa?
We’d love to hear which side you’re on.
